5 steps to find the Passion and Career you Love

How often do you say “I don’t know what I want to do now or in the future”? Are you one of many individuals not sure what you really want or which path to take?

If so, first of all, don’t get stressed out. You are not alone in this. Many of us are not even sure what we like or what would the ideal job for us. If you look around you will see people in their jobs and careers for various different reasons.

WHY people choose and stay in a certain job or career?

  • The job they have might be the one thing they know best (or at least they think so)
  • It provides comfort and stability; this is the greatest illusion as there are no guarantees
  • Fair of changes; people often lack self confidence that they can do better or they are not aware that lots of skills and abilities are transferable to another job or career
  • People love and are passionate about what they do; they follow their dreams, transform hobbies into businesses or land a job or career they love.

There is nothing right or wrong with your current path; it is all about your choice. You build your life and career, and they are based on a number of choices you make. At one point in your life you may choose a job because you need to pay the bills, and 10 years later you may have a career (job or business) you love only because you were brave enough to follow your dreams or had people who supported and believed in you along the way.

If you are not THERE yet, do not get discouraged, you can still do this. All you need to do is Want, Believe and Act. Support from people you care about may mean a world on this journey. But if you do not have support among people that surround you, look elsewhere, they are out there, you just need to find them. Do not be afraid to ask and share.

To help you in this journey, here is your step by step guide towards your dream path. This is an exercise for you that will enable you to see things that you have not noticed or were avoiding before.

5 steps to find your path and passion:

  1. Take a pen and paper and write down everything you love doing (e.g. love pets, knitting, fishing, crunching numbers, etc). Don’t think much, just write down things that may seem funny or not relevant.
  2. Take another piece of paper and now make a list of what you are really good at, what you know or do best.
  3. Look at the lists and prioritize. Choose your top five (5) on each list.
  4. Analyze the top 5 on each list. Are there any matches? Do you love doing something and at the same time good at it? For example, you might love dogs and you’re really good at training dogs. The matches may direct you towards the path that you might want to pursue. If you do not have clear matches, see the correlations between the items on each list. There must be some things or some activities that relate.
  5. The next step is to take your matches or relevant items and do a write up about each item. Describe what you like about each item, why, how it makes you feel when you are involved in that activity. Be specific and detailed in your descriptions.

You might think that writing things down is silly, but believe it or not, this makes you think more and deeper. You will be surprised what comes down on that piece of paper. You will think of things and activities that might not be of great importance to you, but that you love doing and guess what… you can pursue them and transform them into a job or even a business that you may want to build and grow.

Do you see now? You have things you love doing in your life and now is the time to find a way to pursue them. Look at your career, and if it is not what you want, find a way to change it or to adjust it. A lot of skills can be transferred to another job, so if you are not happy with your current one, analyze your skills and how you can transfer to another career.

There are no set rules what you can or cannot do. You design your life, so be creative and enjoy it to the fullest.
